Obituary for William Budke

William “Bill” Joseph Budke, 84, of Leavenworth, passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, January 29, 2022. He was born Aug. 28, 1937, at the family home in Beloit, Kan., to Frank and Mary (Ottley) Budke.

He went to St. John’s Grade School in Beloit, and Sacred Heart High School in Salina, Kan.

Bill served two years in the United States Army and worked other jobs that included being a correctional officer at Kansas State Penitentiary, in Lansing, Kan., and retiring from Ft. Leavenworth as a Heating and Air Conditioning Mechanic.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Leona; his six children, Jim (Patsy), Bob (Kathy), Linda Heintzelman (Jerry), Dennis (Molly), David (Michelle), and Cheryl Budke; 10 grandchildren, Matthew Budke, Joshua Budke, Brian Heintzelman (Sophia), Brent Heintzelman (Sara), Tyler Heintzelman, Dillon Budke, Lydia Budke, Hayden Malone, Jessica Budke and Jake Budke; three great grandchildren, Stetson Heintzelman, Whit Heintzelman and Jude Heintzelman; a sister, Theresa Berndt (Bob) of Minnetonka, Minn.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings, Lucille Budke, Walter Budke, Albert Budke, Clara Streit, Rose Pearce, Francis Budke, Loretta “Lou” Allison, Viola Ward and Mary Nelson.

He was a third-degree Knights of Columbus. Bill’s greatest joy was his family - especially his grandkids and great grandkids. He was a huge Notre Dame football fan. He enjoyed sitting on the back patio, waving at whoever drove by; watching hummingbirds eat from the bird feeder; watching or listening to Royals baseball; reading/watching western or true crime books/movies.

Visitation beginning with the praying of the rosary will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2022, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Glenn Snow, O.Carm., as celebrant. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Leavenworth KS, the Knights of Columbus, Leavenworth KS, or St Jude Children’s Hospital.
