Obituary for Samuel Kyser Sr.

A humble spirit like no other, U.S. Army Ret. MSG, Rev. Samuel Q. Kyser, age 69, was born October 4, 1952 in Evergreen, Alabama, to the late Hiram Q.and Minnie L. Kyser. At the age of 12, he moved with his family to Pensacola, Florida, where he graduated from high school.

In 1974, he joined the United States Army and spent 24 years serving his country. He had tour of duties in Germany, Georgia, California and Korea. Before retiring in 1998, he was the Guard Commander at Fort Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks and a military policeman. He said his cell unit was always the cleanest. After retiring he went to work for Core Civic, a private prison institute. He was there for 17 years before retiring in 2015. In 2012 , he was named Employee of the Year.

Rev. Kyser inspired and touched many individuals in his career and lifetime work.
During his Army career, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Park College and a Master’s degree in Business Management from Webster University. The one degree he was most proud of was his Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Seminary.

Rev. Kyser pastored five churches in the 5th District of the AME Church: Parks Chapel, Sabetha, Kansas; Campbell Chapel AME, Atchison, Kansas; St. Paul AME, Kansas and Bethel AME, Leavenworth, Kansas, his home church.

Sam enjoyed walking, traveling, taking care of his family and reading his Bible. He also loved to ride around and look at God’s beautiful Earth.

On July 14, 2001, he was married to Carolyn (Burr) Kyser in Leavenworth, Kansas. She survives at the home. Sam also leaves to cherish his memories his son, Sam Kyser, Jr.; stepson, Eric Bishop (Christine); daughters, Bridgette Singh (Samunder) and Valarie Kyser; stepdaughters, Shyla Bishop and Tamra Day (Levi); sisters, Lillie Pearl Anderson and Annie Ross Powell; one brother, Eddie Jacobs; brothers-in- law, Frederick Hennesey (Shaundra) and Phillip Sanders (Cheryl); sisters-in-law, Ceola Kyser, Eula Booker, Sandra (Robert) Braxton and Jackie Neely ; grandchildren, Kera, Freedom, Soren, Isaak, Makayla, Jaden, Anna, Raven, Levi and Eve; great grandchildren, Kendal and Jace; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas Booker, Theodore Kyser, Nathaniel Kyser, Daris Kyser and Solomon Kyser; and three sisters, Bobbie Jean Kyser, Joyce Stallworth and Ardella Snowden; brothers-in-law, Michael Sanders, Aaron Burr and Hiram Burr.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, at Bethel AME Church. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the church. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
