Obituary for Ray Young

Ray Allen Young, 73, of Leavenworth, died Sunday, May 24, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospice House, surrounded by his family. He was born June 28, 1946, in Lake County, Calif., the son of Robert Young and Lillian Evans.

On Nov. 18, 1967, Ray met and married Janice Vareberg in Finley, N.D., where he was stationed during his time in the military. She survives at the home. He is also survived by two daughters, Michelle (Chris) Baker and Tanya (Troy) Lockhart; six grandchildren, Tommy (Nicole) Eismann, Ashley (Robert) Salsberry, Robert Young, Bethany Marengo, Brandon Baker and Amber Baker; nine great-grandchildren, Robert Young Jr., Anthony, Makaila, Mason, Skylar and Brayden Salsberry, Peighton and Makenzie Marengo and Sutton Eismann; a younger sister, Kathy (Dennis) Hergert; and several extended family and friends.

Ray retired from the United States Air Force in 1984 after 20 years of service. For the following 23 years Ray worked for Leavenworth County. He spent 8 years working for the Leavenworth Sheriffs Dept. and 15 years as a Probation Officer before retiring in 2008.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, Tom Evans.

He enjoyed taking family and friends to the lake, camping, boating and skiing. Ray was a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals and NASCAR racing. In his younger years, Ray enjoyed going out dancing with his wife and friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2020, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home. Private Burial will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Association.
