Obituary for Phelba Wecas

Phelba Ala Wecas, 75, of Leavenworth, passed away peacefully at home Thursday April 23, 2020. She was born Nov. 12, 1944, in Weatherford, Texas, the daughter of Edward and Phelba Jewell (Mckinney) Gilbert.

She graduated from Weatherford High School in 1963, Weatherford Junior College in 1965 and Cameron University in 1983 with bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

On March 8, 1969, Phelba married Ronald N. Wecas in Weatherford, Texas. She is also survived by a son, Aaron (Chris) Wecas and a daughter; Amy (Mark) Baehr; four grandchildren, Emily and Garrett Wecas and Zachary and Steven Baehr; a brother, Roy (Sandra) Gilbert; a niece, Meredith; and many other relatives and friends.

Phelba taught school in Oklahoma and Lansing, Kan. She loved her first graders and they loved her. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Leavenworth, where she was active in the music ministry. Phelba loved playing for the Kids Praise Choir and the Sanctuary Choir. She enjoyed sewing and reading. She loved making quilts and sharing them with others. Most important to Phelba was spending time with her family.

A memorial service will be announced once the gathering restrictions are lifted at First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Itch’n to Stitch at First United Methodist Church.
