Obituary for Normand Heon

Normand P. Heon, 94, of Leavenworth passed away peacefully on 2 June 2021. He was born June 11, 1926, the son of Louis O. and Lucillia A. Lambert, of Fall River, MA. On Dec 19, 1959, he married Dorothy J. Currie of Louisville, AL. All of whom proceeded him in death.

Normand joined the Army in 1950. He was stationed in several locations throughout his 23-year career to include Ice Land; Germany; Tehran Iran; Fort Leavenworth, Fort Benning and two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the Army in 1973 at the rank of LTC and started one of his favorite passions, he became a teacher. He taught at St. Anne’s Catholic School in Columbus, GA before moving back to Leavenworth and teaching at Xavier Catholic Schools and later Immaculata High School. He was loved by his students and enjoyed when they visited or came up to him years later in a random location and said, “Hi Mr. Heon, do you remember me?”

When he retired after over 20 years from the Catholic School system, he began “working” in his biggest passion, the Catholic Church. He attended Mass at Sacred Heart Church or Saint Casimir Church every day of the week. He took on the duties of Sacristan and became the head sacristan, which he took very seriously, and thoroughly loved! He was a Lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, a Past Grand Knight and a member of the Saint Casimir Men’s Society. He and Dorothy became members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 20##.

After Dorothy’ death in 2012, he enjoyed all the time he spent with his dear friend, Frank Mazeitis. They spent lots of time together at church, and at fish dinners during Lent together.

Normand is survived by three children, Wanda Sanborn of Raleigh, NC; Cecilia (Glenn) Hewitt of Lansing; and Alexander Heon of Leavenworth; 7 grandsons; 3 great-grandsons and 8 great-grand-daughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation beginning with the praying of the rosary will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2021, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, at Sacred Heart Church, Father Marianand Mendem as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt Calvary Cemetery.
