Obituary for Mary Phillips (Swiderski)

Mary Elizabeth Phillips, 97, was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, October 8, 1925, the sixth child of John J. and Mary T. (Tetlinski) Swiderski. Mary passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in the early hours Thursday, May 11, 2023.

She was married to Charles F. Phillips on June 18, 1947, at Sacred Heart Church. Charles preceded her in death on March 15, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John, Frank and Robert; and sisters, Anna Hayes, Sister Anne Joseph (Florence) Swiderski SCL, and Sister Ann Perpetua (“Mill”) Swiderski SCL.

Mary attended Sacred Heart grade school and was a member of the 1943 graduating class of Immaculata High School. She was employed in the accounting office at the Fort Leavenworth Officers' Club until her marriage. She was then a homemaker until 1975, when at the age of 50, she returned to school to become a Certified Nurse Assistant working at Saint John Hospital until her retirement in 1985.

Mary was a member of St. Joseph Church and the St. Joseph Altar Society. She volunteered at Saint John Hospital, the Pilot Service Club, and the Leavenworth Historical Museum.

She is survived by her children, Mitzie (Jerry) Frietchen, Elaine Hughes, Jo Ann (Mark) Jones, and Charles G. (Clarice) Phillips; along with nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at St. Joseph Church. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society or Crossroads Hospice.
