Obituary for Joan Calway

Joan Marie Calway, 62, of Leavenworth, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, at home. She was born March 8, 1959, at St. John Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan., to Donald F. and Charlotte (Gail) Aaron Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Calway; her father; and her brother, Donald F. “Butch” Aaron, Jr.

Joan is survived by her mother; two sons, James A.F. “Ryan” (Onnichar) Calway and John F.S. (Elise) Calway; two granddaughters, Charlotte M.W. Calway and Mirarani S. Calway; three stepdaughters, Cassandra, Christy and Carmel Calway; a sister, Gail Doetzl; two brothers, Stephen (Susan) Aaron and Frank Aaron; and four sisters-in-law, Barbara Aaron and Norma, Kathleen and Maureen Calway.

She also had many cherished nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Joan had meaningful lifelong friendships with her cousins, the Diddes, Klasinskis and Gails. She had treasured friendships with grade school and high school classmates and others she met throughout her life. All of these wonderful people, family and friends, made life interesting and filled her life with all the sorrows and joys that human relationships bring.

Joan graduated from Immaculate High School in 1977. She later earned a degree in Elementary Education from the University of St. Mary’s and worked for Leavenworth County Special Education Cooperative, Lansing USD 469 and Metropolitan Nashville (TN) Public Schools. Joan thoroughly enjoyed teaching children and held a special place in her heart for children with special needs.

She loved music, reading and spending her life with her husband James and her friends and family.

Joan would appreciate memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in gratitude for the happy, healthy children in her family. A committal service and burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Sacred Heart Church and Cemetery in Kickapoo, Kan. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
