Obituary for Jeffrey Smith

Jeffrey Allan Smith, 62, of Leavenworth, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer.

His family knew him as a charismatic man with a larger-than-life personality and someone who always had to have the last word. He could find the humor in any situation, even in the days leading up to his death. Jeff had many passions in life: his love for NASCAR, the Kansas City Royals, and KU basketball to name a few.

A longtime law enforcement officer whose career with the Lansing Police Department began in 1983, Jeff received the Leavenworth County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award in 1994 as well as a Silver Star Award in the same year. Following his law enforcement career, Jeff served his community as being a laid-back individual who enjoyed taking naps.

Jeff’s survivors include his loving wife, Connie; and children, Brooke Frederick of Leavenworth, Kan., Megan (Zach) Smith of Kearney, Mo., Kasey (Kyle) Vena of Kansas City, Mo., Sarah Smith of Leavenworth, Kan., and Kurt Weber of Fleming Island, Fla. He was also a very proud grandfather to eight grandchildren, Ainslee and Raegan Frederick, Quinn Smith, Peyton, Owen and Luke Vena, and Madison and Kaelyn Mohan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Radford and Betty Smith, as well as his three brothers, Phillip Slack, Jerry Smith and Terry Smith.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leavenworth County Humane Society or VITAS Community Connection. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Rick Whitlow, Dr. Charles Porter and entire staff at The University of Kansas Health System’s cardiology and oncology departments.
