Obituary for James Vassar

James “Jim” Edwin Vassar, passed away peacefully at The Piper Assisted Living and Memory Care in Kansas City, Kan. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020. He was born Jan. 31, 1936, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the son of John and Mary Vassar.

He is survived by Maxine (Betty) Webb Vassar, his wife of 63 years; children, Lene’ Whitworth (Ron) and Ramona Vassar Lindsay (Larry); five grandchildren, Mandy Whitworth, Tami Whitworth, Jimi (James) Isbell, Matthew Isbell and Tony Isbell; grandson-in-law, John Snyder; four great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Vassar; son, James S. Vassar; and siblings, Leona Dean, Julia Caylor, John Vassar, Jr., William Vassar, and Mary Ellen Hupp.

Before moving to Leavenworth, Kan., Jim and his wife lived on a farm near Easton, Kan., for nearly 50 years. Jim’s greatest joy was his family and working on the farm with Maxine where they raised their children, tended to cattle and other livestock and spent countless hours gardening. The farm and all its memories are still dear to all the surviving members of Jim’s family.

Jim was a safety inspector for Santa Fe Railroad in Kansas City, Atchison and Lawrence. He also served in the U.S. Army.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jimi (James) Isbell, Matthew Isbell, Tony Isbell and John Snyder. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Whitworth and Larry Lindsay (sons-in-law) and (grandson-in-law)


Arrangement being made for a closed graveside service at Springdale Friends Cemetery, where Jim will be buried next to his son, James. S. Vassar.
