Obituary for James Cope

James A. Cope, 70, of Leavenworth, passed away suddenly from covid complications, Wednesday, July 6, 2022. He will be greatly missed by the many friends and family he cherished. Jim was born in Hartford, Conn., June 17, 1952, to Imelda and George Cope.

He leaves behind his wife and high school sweetheart, Eve Cope of Leavenworth; his son, Brendan Cope and wife, Stacy and their three children of Omaha, Neb.; his daughter, Rachel Sweet and husband, Nick and their three children of Leavenworth; and a sister, Wendy Weed and husband, Bruce of Glastonbury, Conn.

Jim spent 20 years in the U.S. Army as an Infantry officer followed by six years as an AS-400 computer recruiter and several years as a military contractor for the US government, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrup Grumman and Trideum. He was passionate about sharing his Catholic faith. Jim loved his Church, his country, his family and his friends. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He has fought the good fight. He has finished the race. He has kept the faith and has been called home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2022, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor, Kan. with the rosary prayed at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with viewing prior to the Mass, at Holy Angels Church, celebrated by Fr. Richard McDonald. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim Cope’s memory are requested to Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor, Kan. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
