Obituary for Irene Mehl

Irene R. Mehl, 96, a lifelong resident of Leavenworth, died February 22, 2021, at her home. She was born December 31, 1924 in Leavenworth, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Cegielski) Buselt, Sr. She attended St. Casimir Catholic School and graduated from Immaculata High School.

Irene married Albert C. Mehl, Jr. on June 26, 1948, in Leavenworth. He preceded her in death Janurary 27, 1996. Her daughter, Cathy Ann Finnell also preceded her in death July 25, 1998. Irene was the youngest of eleven siblings, all who preceded her in death: Mary Buselt, Carl, Helen Kubicki, Valentine Williams, Michael Jr, Jane Williams, Bernice O’Leary, Wanda Powell, Frank, and Alfred, all of Leavenworth.
Her surviving children include, Richard Mehl, Leavenworth, Jeannie Mehl, Prescott, Ariz., Mary Lane, Leavenworth, and James Mehl, Kenmore, Wash. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Samuel Lane, David Lane and Emma Claire Finnell; and many nieces and nephews.
Irene was a member of St. Casimir Church, and a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #56. During WWII she worked on B25’s at the Kansas City, KS bomber plant. In her earlier years she enjoyed playing softball, golf, and bowling. Irene enthusiastically followed the KC Chiefs, Royals and KU sports, as well as golf tournaments. She loved gardening and outdoor activities. Irene maintained her sense of humor and will be missed.
She was cremated and a private family ceremony is to be held at a later date. If desired, memorials may be offered to St. Casimir’s Church or Meals on Wheels.
