Obituary for Idabelle Edlin
Idabelle Caroline Edlin, 100, went to be with her Lord Wednesday morning April 7, 2021, in Olathe, Kan. She was born April 1, 1921 on the family farm in Leavenworth County, Kan. to her parents Oliver Frank and Carrie Agnes (Saunders) New. She grew up attending High Prairie Gospel Tabernacle where she committed to follow Jesus at an early age. She graduated valedictorian from Jarbalo High School in 1938 and went on to Kansas City College of Commerce and worked at Montgomery Ward Mail Order House in Kansas City, Missouri. After completing her degree in bookkeeping, Ida returned to Leavenworth working first at Gambles and then at the County Attorney’s Office.
On December 3, 1942 she married her high school sweetheart Glen Allen Edlin at the First Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga. Glen was a tech sergeant in the United States Army Air Force stationed in Tullahoma, Tenn. at the time. During the war, the young couple lived in Savannah, Ga., Tampa, Fla., Baton Rouge, La., and Sweet Water, Texas. While Glen served in the Aleutian Islands, Ida returned to Leavenworth to have their first child, Glenda.
Following the war, Glen worked for Montgomery Ward, which required the family to move to Pittsburg, Kan., Parsons, Kan., Great Bend, Kan., Lubbock, Texas, and Roswell, N.M. When Glen worked at the Fairfax Airplane Factory, they lived in Kansas City, Kan. before returning to Leavenworth and running Edlin Grocery on Spruce Street from 1955-1963. In 1963, Glen and Ida moved the family to Lawrence, Kan. where they operated the Sinclair Bulk Agency. In 1972, they moved to Topeka, KS as owners of Edlin Oil Company. Throughout these years Ida worked alongside Glen managing the office and planting vegetable gardens.
Wherever they moved Ida always found a church for the family to attend. In Leavenworth they attended the United Brethren Church and in Lawrence the First Church of the Nazarene. In Topeka both Glen and Ida became active members of Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene serving in a variety of capacities. The church honored them with a Distinguished Service award in 1990.
Ida will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her gentle spirit, love of family, commitment to God and His church, faithful prayer life, welcoming home, birthday cards, and taking pictures.
After 62 years of marriage, Glen preceded Ida in death December 16, 2004. They are survived by their three children: Glenda Stevenson of Oklahoma City, Okl., Steven (Miriam) of Bella Vista, Al., and James (Jo) of Olathe, Kan. She also leaves behind six grandchildren: Mindy Stevenson, Julie (Eric) Bryant, Carrie (Mark) Petty, Janelle (Matt) MacKay, Aimee (Mike) Mandick, and Jonathan (Mindy) Edlin; and nine great-grandchildren: Jacob and Daniel Bryant, Addison and Macie MacKay, Sam and Ben Petty, Carolina and Graham Edlin, and Millie Mandick.
A visitation will be 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at High Prairie Church in Leavenworth, Kan. on Saturday April 10, 2021. at 12:30 pm. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, at the church. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens in Leavenworth, Kan. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries at ncm.org or the High Prairie Church.
