Gilbert Suppes, 96, of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023, at North Care Hospice House. He was born in Liebenthal, Kan., May 11, 1927, and later raised in LaCrosse, Kan.

He joined the Merchant Marines to serve his country in WWII. Gilbert served on Liberty Ship SS James H. Lane in the South Pacific.

Gilbert’s military service included tours in Texas, Nebraska, California, Georgia, Korea, England, Germany and Iceland before retiring from the military in November of 1969.

Gilbert then embarked on a second career with Control Data Corporation as a Computer Hardware Engineer based at Boston, Mass., Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., before retiring from Control Data in April 1989.

While stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha, Neb. in 1953, Gilbert met Marie, the love of his life. They spent 70 years traveling the world together welcoming their daughters- Karen in England, and Pamela in Germany.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann "Marie" (Zielinski) Suppes of the home; daughters, Karen Cole of Lansing, Kan., and Pamela Snowman of Leavenworth; grandsons Christopher Cole of Lansing, Kan., and Kyle Snowman of Leavenworth; and a sister, Elsie Haberman of Meade, Kan.

He loved golf, reading, computers, puzzles, and Blackjack. His notorious sweet tooth often found him snacking on Cadbury Chocolate, German Chocolate cake or vanilla ice cream.

In Gilbert’s later years, his greatest source of joy and pride was his beloved grandsons, Christopher and Kyle.

Gilbert was a man of strong moral character, where duty, honor, country, and family, were not just words, but a lifestyle. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
