Obituary for Gary Fox
Gary A. Fox, 80, of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, at his home surrounded by family. He was born Aug. 18, 1940, in Spirt Lake, Iowa, the oldest of four children to Harold H. and Patricia A. (Peterson) Fox.
In the eight grade, Gary’s father told him if he wanted to attend high school, he would have to get a job. Gary worked for a grocery store and a hardware store during his high school years instead of playing sports, something he always believed he would have excelled at.
After graduation he knew College was not an option, so he enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1957 and served honorably until 1961. During his time in the Army he was stationed in Colorado, California, Texas and Kansas, where he met the most wonderful girl and love of his life.
On April 28, 1962, Gary married Maureen Ann Hudson. She was his sunrise and sunset. Maureen preceded Gary in death November 4, 2012, after over 50 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roger and Craig Fox.
In 1962 he began working at the Federal Prison System at USP Leavenworth, he went on to work for FCI Lompoc, USP Atlanta, FCI Oxford and USP Lewisburg. During all of this relocating they lived in 28 different homes in 40 years. In July 1988, he retired from the Bureau of Prisons at USP Lewisburg and he and Maureen relocated to Leavenworth where he worked for a local vending machine company. In 1992 he became the manager of the USPLK Employee Federal Credit Union where he retired in 2002. He then went to work for R.L. Leintz Funeral Home for many years assisting with funeral services. His devotion to the funeral home and the families was evident when he continued working as his health was failing.
Gary is survived by two sons, Scott (Virginia) and Stephen (Theresa); four wonderful grandchildren, Zach, Chelsea, Jessica and Chase; two great-grandsons, Kaden and Case; and a sister, Barbara.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Church, where masks will be required. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Catholic Community Hospice.
