Obituary for Frances Behrens (Martin)

Frances Eleanora Behrens, born Frances Eleanora Martin on Sept. 2, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., peacefully passed away Feb. 5, 2024, at the age of 75 in Lansing, Kan., surrounded by her loving family.

She was a beloved wife and adored being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great grandmother. Frances married Richard Behrens in Loveland, Colo., on Aug. 9, 1969, and their marriage was blessed in the Catholic Church on Dec. 10, 1990.

A talented seamstress, she dedicated her life to various crafts, including cross-stitch, crochet and quilting. Her skilled hands brought to life beautiful creations that adorned the homes of her loved ones. Frances was also an avid game player and excelled as a card shark. In her younger days, she and Richard enjoyed square dancing, bowling and fishing together. Frances was a familiar face at the Heritage Center in Leavenworth, where she spent many years playing games, crafting and making items to sell in support of the center.

Frances was deeply involved in her community and displayed her devotion by volunteering at the VFW Bingo Kitchen. She was also a Knights Lady to a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lansing.
In addition to her hobbies, Frances had a passion for travel. She and Richard embarked on numerous adventures, creating cherished memories along the way.

She is survived by her daughter, Kate Herbert and son-in-law, Paul and granddaughter, Jana of the home; daughter, Barb Lisk and son-in-law, Frank of Leavenworth, Kan.; daughter, Michelle Hearn and daughter-in-law, Mary in Houston, Texas; son, Frank Hearn and fiancée, Jackqueline Case of Oak Grove, Mo.; son, Richard Behrens and daughter-in-law, Laurie of Lansing, Kan; daughter, Michele Denton of Bonner Springs, Kan.; and daughter, Irene Teig and son-in-law, Mark of Independence, Mo.; brother, Bob Martin and sister-in-law, Judy; brother, Dick Martin and sister-in-law, Sandy; brother, Donnie Martin; as well as 27 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Behrensp; mother, Mary Frances (McBee) Shawgo; stepfather, Scott Shawgo; and father, Donald Martin.

She pursued higher education and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from KCKCC in 1995. She went on to have a successful career as an IT Specialist for Social Security, retiring in September 2008.

Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Frances Eleanora Behrens will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
