The Reverend John C. Maier died Friday, November 18, 2022, at St. John Hospital. Father Maier was born July 22, 1935, in Leavenworth, and ordained to the Holy Priesthood July 27, 1990, by Bishop William Bullock of the Archdiocese of Des Moines, Iowa. Cherished son of the late William and Theresa Maier; dear brother of Joseph (Mary) Maier, the late William Maier, the late Frank Maier, and the late Mary Theresa (Maier) Wells; loving uncle; beloved great uncle, and great-great uncle, cherished Priest, and friend of many.
After being ordained in 1990, Father John’s first assignment August 6, 1990 was Parochial Vicar at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Parish, Ankeny, Iowa,; July 11, 1991 he was Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph Parish, Des Moines, Iowa; July 9,1992 Father John was appointed Pastor at St Ann Parish, Logan, Iowa, and Holy Family Parish, Mondamin, Iowa; July 13, 1995 he was the Parochial Vicar, Queen of Apostles Parish, Council Bluffs, Iowa; July 11,1996, the Pastor at St. Patrick Parish, Audubon, Iowa and Holy Trinity Parish, Exira, Iowa; July 13, 2000, the Parochial Vicar at Holy Spirit Parish, Creston, Iowa and St. Edward Parish Afton, Iowa, until his retirement July 10, 2003.
In retirement Father John returned to his hometown of Leavenworth, Kan., continuing to serve part-time at various parishes and provide religious ministry to prisoners.
Father John made an impression with everyone he knew. His devotion to serve others and spread the gospel was the reason for his priestly vocation. Father John was the spiritual foundation for his family. He will be missed by his family who are so grateful for the time Father John spent with them. Father John was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Glenn Snow, O.Carm, as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
