Obituary for Erik Kittrell

Erik Shannon Kittrell, 54, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away, Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022 at the St. Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo. He was born March 13, 1967, to Sandy Kittrell and Ann Mullins in Camp LeJeune, N.C.

He graduated from North Andrew High School in 1985. Erik went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Missouri Western State University.

Erik served in the United States Army from 1985-1987. He was stationed at Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Wash. He reached the rank of PFC. Erik was very proud of his military service.

He had a career as a Correctional Officer for almost 30 years. He was employed by Western Missouri Correctional Facility and Lansing Correctional Facility. At the time of his death, Erik was an officer at the United States Penitentiary Leavenworth.

Erik was a big gun and knife enthusiast. He enjoyed shooting his guns, cleaning and talking about them. He was often lending a hand to repair and work on friends and family’s guns as well. His knowledge of firearms was vast and he was always happy to educate others. He loved riding his motorcycle. In his last months, Erik shared how he felt truly free of all cares just cruising down the road.

He was a member of the Hancock Masonic Lodge # 311, where he was just installed as the Junior Warden. A member of Abdallah Shrine, where he was a past president of the Escorts and past treasurer of the Provost Guard.

Erik is survived by his parents; Nichole (Ron) Lewis, daughter from his first wife, Carol Wilson; son, Jon Rubendall, and daughter, Katelyn (Colton) Harper, children from his second wife, Stacey Morris; grandchildren, Jaigen Lewis, Kaige Kittrell, Mykayla Dunken, Skye Dunken, Brooklyne Lewis, Paislee Kittrell, Kopelyn Harper and Presleigh Harper; three brothers, Michael (Tamila) Kittrell, Ryan Kittrell and Josh Kittrell; a sister, Ashley Kittrell; one aunt, Betty Hahn; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; close cousins, Dave and Sherry Frazer; and close friends, Archie and Lisa Black.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Sandy Sr. and Tommie Kittrell; maternal grandparents, Earl and Velma Baxter; and a granddaughter, Emberlynn June Harper.

Services for Erik will be held at a later date.
