Obituary for Elizabeth Bayless

Elizabeth Jean (McBride) Bayless, 95, passed away, March 25, 2022, in Kansas City, Kan., at home with her family. Betty was born to LeRoy and Elizabeth Beatrice (Barber) McBride on Oct. 3, 1926, in Ottumwa, Iowa.

On July 28, 1951, Betty married Robert M. Bayless in Seattle, Wash. They were married for 67 years until he passed away in 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, James, John and William; and two sisters, Clara and Mary Lucille.

Betty lived a long and full life. She travelled and lived in a number of foreign countries and states as she lived the life of a military spouse who served over 30 years in service. During her retirement years she lived in Lacey, Wash., Sun City, Ariz., and Kansas City, Kan. She loved to travel and experience new adventures. Late in life her activities became limited as she lost her sight, but she still maintained a very spirited attitude and love of socializing.

Betty spent most of her life in a support role for her family. Raising her two children she was known as an excellent baker and the house always had the aroma of fresh baked “goodies”. As an empty nester she began a new phase of her life. She became actively involved in the retirement community and would host a number of social events within her neighborhood. There was never a time where it seemed as though she wasn’t planning or executing some type of neighborhood party and trying to involve as many people as possible.

The things she adored the most was her three grandchildren and in the last 12 years her two great granddaughters who affectionately called her “Sugar Sugar”. She always had an extreme interest in their lives and relished the time she spent with them.

Betty will be missed, especially her fighting spirit, by those who will miss her the most.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Madsen; her son, Bob, Jr (Peggy); her daughter, Karen VanVleet (John), three grandchildren, Steven (Raquel), Sara and Michael (Brooke); and two great granddaughters, Alexis and Anna.

Mass of Christian burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at St. Francis de Sales Church. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Catholic Community Health, www.catholiccommunityhospice.com/donations.
