Obituary for Edward Reed

Edward “Gar” LeRoy Reed, 83, of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2020, surrounded by his family at home. He was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Leavenworth, the son of Adolph Edward and Sylvia Bell Reed.

On Sept. 28, 1964 Edward married the love of his life, Wilma Jane Reed in Leavenworth. She survives at the home. He is also survived by a son, Edward L. Reed Jr. of Smithville, Mo.; two daughters, Lois A. Hammer and Cynthia J. Paul both of Leavenworth; two sisters, Jean Long and Rita Malotte; two brothers, Leonard Reed and Ernest Reed; six grandchildren, Erica DeMaranville, Matthew Reed, Amanda Reed, Sarah Ragan, Mikala Reed and Nathan Reed; and 11 great-grandchildren, Allister Ragan, Eilish Ragan, Elaina Ragan, Greyson Reed, Kaydence Berman, Gage Folks-Manthe, Cayde Folks-Manthe, Ashtin Manthe, Raquel Manthe, Savanna Berman and Melissa Reed-Jaccard.

Edward served in the United States Navy from Jan. 16, 1956 to Nov. 15, 1959. He boxed while he was in the Navy. Edward was a patriot, proud to serve his country. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and watching sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Eugene Reed; one grandchildren, Melissa Reed; three sisters, Doris Younger, Betty Housworth and his twin, Edna Lorraine Reed; and a brother, Richard Reed.

Edward was a loving husband, a dedicated father and a wonderful grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
