Obituary for Edna Cowling
Edna Grace Cowling, 88, of Leavenworth, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020, at Country Care in Easton, Kan. She was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Leavenworth, Kan., the daughter of Elmer John and Lillie Mae (Chapman) Cowling.
Edna attended the Third Avenue School, Junior High School and Leavenworth High School, graduating the Class of 1949. She worked at Army Cooperative Fire Association half days during her senior year conjunction with the Office Practice Program and continued for the following year. She then attended Park College in Parkville, Mo., for one year.
Her employment also included the Dept. of the Army, CGSC; Internal Revenue Service, Helena, Montana; the Gospel Missionary Union, Smithville, Mo.; and the Armed Forces Insuring Association, Leavenworth, from which she retired after 24 years. However, she continued employment at temporary, part-time and permanent positions in the Leavenworth area. When she was 76 she started enjoying full-time retirement.
Through the years her special concern was teaching children about Jesus from a very early age through Sunday School, Junior Church and Good News Club.
Another of Edna’s interests was writing poetry, mostly Christian poetry and poems about God’s creation and creatures, and she wrote articles on various topics.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Elmer John Cowling Jr.; two sisters, Dorothea Lois Cowling and Anna Hermine Schermbeck; a brother-in-law, Harold Alfred Schermbeck; a niece, Linda Kay Schermbeck; and a great-niece, Lindsay Nicole Knapp.
She is survived by two nephews, John Frederick Schermbeck and Rev. Robert Harold Schermbeck (Robin); two nieces, Linda Ruth Schwinn (Danny) and Carol Ann Knapp (Robert); 12 great nieces and nephews, John Schermbeck Jr., Shelby Schermbeck, Julie Zule (David, Randy Schwinn (Amy), Rick Schwinn (Jackie), Tim Schermbeck (Cassie), Andy Schermbeck (Rebecca), Sarah Steward (Barrett), Amy Froiland (Chris), Cody Knapp (Christine), Ethan Knapp and Heather Eucker (Evan); and 25 great great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Mount Muncie Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to High Prairie Church.
