Obituary for Douglas Mauton
Doug Mauton, the proud son of Lawrence and Evelyn Mauton, was welcomed as the newest groundskeeper in Eternal Life Wednesday, 17 February 2021 (John Deere tractor provided). In love with the beauty of the earth as long as he walked it, Doug spent his childhood summers in the Coal Creek community south of Centralia, Kansas helping his Haskenkamp family tend to their farm. In his senior year at Oak Park High School, as a Gladstone, MO mischievous teenager, he was introduced (by his older sister, one of his seven siblings - Jan, Larry, Mary Kay, Pattie, Richard, Robert, and Ron) to the beautiful girl who would become his wife and friend of forty-eight years - Ivonne. Doug and Ivonne, married in 1972, became parents to two girls, Amy and Emily, both of whom carry on his clever wit and art of lovingly teasing (but only one who carries on his green thumb!).
Doug joyfully accepted the position of father-in-law (with more heart for the father title than in-law) when Emily married Michael Garven in 2008. It was in 2011, though, that Doug stepped into the role he was made for (Santa beard, rosy cheeks, bright blue eyes, and all) when he became Papa to his beloved Luke, the kind, thoughtful, and intelligent son of Emily and Michael. It was in 2012 that Doug again joyfully accepted the position of father (in-law) when Amy married Flynn Collins. Doug then met his match in 2016 when his Landrey, daughter of Emily and Michael, was born, a spitfire who made her Papa laugh and shake his head with delight. Doug’s family, however, was always expanding as he and Ivonne welcomed friends and those in need of a bit of tenderness, care, and loving into their home. His eyes always held a particular glint of pleasure and pride as he would prepare and share a meal with all his family and friends, especially including his nephews Michael Bell, Stephen Bell, Alberto Pérez, and his niece Liana Marti-Pérez.
Doug’s seventy-two years were trademarked with a sharp mind, tremendous sense of humor, dedication to family, a willingness to work hard, keep things in order (especially his lawn tools, change jar, and checkbook), and give of what he had - a wise word, a good laugh, a bit of food, and the firm belief to treat everyone with respect.
Doug’s life will be celebrated with a Funeral Liturgy at 10 AM on Saturday, March 6th at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Leavenworth Kansas.
