Obituary for David Johnson

David Lee Johnson, age 80, passed away peacefully at Providence Medical Center, surrounded by his family on Monday, June 29, 2020. He was born on April 23, 1940 in Leavenworth, Kansas to Arthur and Lela Johnson. David was the youngest of five children: Arthur, Howard, Dorothy, and Charlotte.

After graduating Leavenworth High school, David joined the Navy and served eight years as a finance disbursing clerk. On July 30, 1961, he married Lula Sue Oliphant. During their 59 years of marriage they raised fours sons and one daughter. After leaving the Navy, David moved his family back from California to Leavenworth and began a lifetime commitment of giving back to his community. After several years in the finance industry, David started his own insurance agency and retired in 2002. He was an active member and leader in the Elks, Kiwanis, Eagles, Leavenworth Country Club and Crossroads United Methodist church. David’s special interests were his family, friends and traveling. Over the years, he enjoyed countless golf vacations and Kansas City Chief road trips with his wife and friends. He was a devoted father who consistently provided love and support for his children and their families.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; sons, David (Pam), Robert (Linda), Steven and Michael; daughter, Francesca McHenry (Roger); grandchildren, Cheryl, Jennifer, Dennis (Kindra), Nick (Erika), Rene (Clayton), Liam, Hannah and Cayden; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Parks; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be Friday, July 3, 2020 at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Visitation is at 10 a.m. and the service is scheduled for 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in honor of David to the Crossroads United Methodist Church, 101 E. Gilman Road, Lansing, Kansas.
