Obituary for Carlo DePaolis Jr.

Carlo “Carl” DePaolis Jr., 94, of Leavenworth, beloved father, grandfather coach and teacher passed away Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023. He was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Freedom, Penn., to Carlo Sr. and Elide (Barzanti) DePaolis.

In his youth he excelled in athletics. During his senior year he was high scorer in basketball for the western half of Pennsylvania and was awarded a football scholarship at Wichita University. While playing for Wichita he went to two bowl games and achieved honors as an outstanding lineman. He graduated from Wichita University with a master’s degree in education.

On Aug. 8, 1954, Carl married the love of his life Clarita Roach in Wichita, Kan. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Flora Steele, Polyanna Rusnack and Lena Catana; and two brothers, Joseph and Casper.

Carl is survived by his son, Dion DePaolis, and wife Monica of Leavenworth; eight grandchildren, Metin, Dion Jr., Mekayla, Antonio, Mico, Jesus, Veronica and Isaiah DePaolis; and brother, Lawrence DePaolis of Freedom, Penn.

He taught and coached at several high schools in western Kansas before becoming head football coach at Lansing High School. Carl finished his career at Eisenhower Elementary School. In his retirement, he loved spending time with and caring for his grandchildren.

Carl was also a devoted member of St. Casimir Church and St. Casimir Men’s Society. His hobbies included oil and watercolor painting and gardening.

Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday Feb. 3, 2023, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Saint Casimir Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Casimir Men’s Society.
