Obituary for Betty Vassar

Maxine (Betty) Vassar, 87, from Leavenworth, passed away Oct. 28, 2020, at Providence Medical Center. Maxine was born April 28, 1933, in Rock Springs, Ark., to parents Luther and Okla (Massey) Webb.

Maxine joined Jim Vassar, her husband of 63 years, who passed away, Oct. 6, 2020. Maxine was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, James S. Vassar; and siblings, Geraldine Gibson and Clyde Webb.

Maxine is survived by her daughters, Lene’ Whitworth (Ron) and Ramona Vassar Lindsay (Larry); grandchildren, Mandy (John), Jimi, Tami, Matt and Tony; great grandchildren, Abbie, Shayne, Marcus and Chandler; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Maxine had recently moved in June 2020 from Leavenworth, Kan., to an assisted living home in Kansas City, Kan. Before that, she lived on a farm with Jim near Easton, Kansas, for nearly 50 years. Maxine was Jim’s equal partner in raising their children, providing for their family and creating a lifetime of love for her children, grandchildren, many relatives and friends. Maxine was the epitome of unconditional love to everyone she met.

Maxine was an artist at sewing, baking, cooking, crafting and gardening. She was sweet to everyone she met, always had a memory or story to tell and shared her love with anyone who came into her home or crossed her path.

Before marrying Jim and moving to Nuernberg, Germany, to join him where he was stationed in the U.S. Army, Maxine worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Kansas City, Mo. In addition to her lifelong career as a homemaker, she also worked as a records clerk at Cushing Memorial in Leavenworth, Kan.

The family will celebrate Maxine’s life at a closed visitation at R.L. Leintz Funeral Home in Leavenworth, followed by a graveside service at Springdale Friends Cemetery, where Maxine will join her husband and son, James. S. Vassar.Maxine will join her husband and son, James. S. Vassar.
